Cultural differences in mutual gaze during face-to-face interactions: A dual head-mounted eye-tracking study

نویسندگان

چکیده

Cross-cultural psychologists have widely discussed “gaze avoidance” as a sociocultural norm to describe reduced mutual gaze in East Asians (EAs) compared Western Caucasians (WCs). Supportive evidence is primarily based on self-reports and video recordings of face-to-face interactions, but more objective techniques that can investigate the micro-dynamics are scarce. The current study used dual head-mounted eye-tracking EA WC dyads examine face looking during live social interactions. Both cultural groups showed when listening than speaking, an introductory task storytelling game. Crucially, WCs, spent significantly time engaging gaze, individual instances were longer EAs for Our findings challenge generalizable observation, highlight need consider contextual factors dynamically influence both within between cultures.

Prior Knowledge Facilitates Mutual Gaze Convergence and Head Nodding Synchrony in Face-to-face Communication

As prior knowledge is claimed to be an essential key to achieve effective education, we are interested in exploring whether prior knowledge enhances communication effectiveness. To demonstrate the effects of prior knowledge, mutual gaze convergence and head nodding synchrony are observed as indicators of communication effectiveness. We conducted an experiment on lecture task between lecturer an...

Analyzing Gaze During Face-to-Face Interaction

We present here the analysis of multimodal data gathered during realistic face-to-face interaction of a target speaker with a number of interlocutors. Videos and gaze have been monitored with an experimental setup using coupled cameras and screens with integrated eye trackers. With the aim to understand the functions of gaze in social interaction and to develop a coherent gaze control model for...

Eye tracking unconscious face-to-face confrontations: dominance motives prolong gaze to masked angry faces.

In primates, dominance/submission relationships are generally automatically and nonaggressively established in face-to-face confrontations. Researchers have argued that this process involves an explicit psychological stress-manipulation mechanism: Striding with a threatening expression, while keeping direct eye contact, outstresses rivals so that they submissively avert their gaze. In contrast,...

Mother-infant mutual eye gaze supports emotion regulation in infancy during the Still-Face paradigm.

This study was designed to examine the sequential relationship between mother-infant synchrony and infant affect using multilevel modeling during the Still Face paradigm. We also examined self-regulatory behaviors that infants use during the Still-Face paradigm to modulate their affect, particularly during stressors where their mothers are not available to help them co-regulate. There were 84 m...

Speakers’ eye gaze disambiguates referring expressions early during face-to-face conversation

In two experiments, we explored the time course and flexibility with which speakers’ eye gaze can be used to disambiguate referring expressions in spontaneous dialog. Naive director/matcher pairs were separated by a barrier and saw each other’s faces but not their displays. Displays held identical objects, with the matcher’s arranged in a row and the director’s mirroring the matcher’s or else i...
